Why are so few international students going to Chinese universities?

You are very uninformed if you think that there are few international students at Chinese universities.


Actually, there are a lot.


Traditionally, many came from Southeast Asia and Africa, but that is now changing, and many Europeans are going to China now. They are not going to study Chinese either; many are going to study medicine, engineering, civil engineering and other fields.


In fact, many Chinese universities are offering international students scholarships to study. In some cases, they can get scholarships equivalent to two years of free study in China.


One of the challenges of studying in China is having to learn Chinese, which is a difficult language for most people. Some Chinese universities offer classes in English so that the Chinese language requirements are not as stringent. After all, if you are studying medicine and plan to be a doctor, do you really want to spend 2–3 years learning Chinese just so that you can follow your medical courses? Not likely. Same if you want to become an engineer.


From the Chinese government’s perspective, they are making an investment. If these students have a happy time in China, and make Chinese friends, they are likely to be friendly to China as they become successful in their careers.


Having friends is always important.
