 Curriculum:

Apart from specialized courses which can be different from major to major, all students have to take the following mandatory courses:

College English

Advanced mathematics

Computer courses

Politics and Ideology: Ideological and Moral Cultivation, Marxist Philosophic Theory, Mao Ze-Dong Thoughts & Deng Xiao-ping Theory, Modern and Contemporary Chinese history

Courses under the Politics and Ideology list are considered as ‘useless’ and ‘boring’ by most students. People like me usually just skip most of these courses - just make sure you pass the final exams.

2. Physical Education (PE) is mandatory, for each semester you have to select one sport from the list - for example, for the first 4 semester of my uni I selected tennis, swimming, volleyball and golf. At the end of the semester you will be tested 1km or 3km running, sit-ups, standing long jump, and the skills of the sport you select for that semester.

3. In addition to mandatory courses and major courses, students also have some selective courses which cover nearly all fields. For example, I selected History of Sino-Soviet Relations, Nicomachean Ethics, Diplomatic History of PRC and Ming-Qing History.

4. At the beginning or ending of your freshman you will have a military training which lasts for half of a month. The school will invite military instructors on the active list of PLA(People’s Liberation Army) or PAP(People’s Armed Police) to teach students parade step, military boxing, weapon knowledge and international situation. Again, the quality of the training vary from school to school.

5. Study load depends on the quality of your university, your major and your personal wish - you would always find hard-working students in the 24hr study room and students playing video games at dormitory.

Food:

The university usually has several canteens managed by professional catering companies. At dining time students will line up in front of different windows to swipe cards and get their food. As the food is generally based the taste of place where the university is located, some students from other provinces may find it difficult to get used to school food.

2. Apart from school canteens, students may go to some restaurants outside campus, but the price is generally higher.

Accommodation:

All students are required to stay at the school dormitory. One room can accommodate 4 people, in the room there are beds with desks underneath, a toilet/bathroom and a balcony (for washing and drying clothes), see the picture below:

Living with roommates from different backgrounds, it would be a good opportunity to learn, accept and tolerate others - a very important lesson for our generation who grow up in one-child policy families and get spoiled at home. Again, your roommates can be your close friends at uni.

Association/Club activities:

Generally there are two kinds of orgnizations - (1) Student Union&Youth League Committee and (2) ‘Interests clubs’ (e.g. Photographic Association). (1) is for students who would like to apply civil servants after graduations while (2) is just for fun.
